CHAPTER 17
WINSTON RETURNED TO an empty house and sat fuming in the living room. The neighbors seemed like theyâd all been home and might make good witnesses. He knew he needed to question them about Bill, but how?
At that moment, Marcy strolled in. She smelled like hairspray, and her nails gleamed with a bright-orange polish.
âYou went to the salon? Do you know what you missed?â Winston shivered. âAn ambulance came for Bill.â
Marcy thrust a flyer into his hand. âThat explains what I found posted in the mail area.â
The paper urged for a neighborhood watch meeting to be held tomorrow night. Besides the regulars, though, who would be able to make it on such short notice?
âI bet itâs to elect a new captain.â Marcy lowered her eyes. âSo sad about Bill.â
âA real shame.â But the meeting offered the perfect opportunity to discover what had really happened. Itâd be his chance to talk to the others, to find out whether theyâd seen anything suspicious when Bill had fallen from his ladder.
Blueberry came by and rubbed his body against Winstonâs legs. In that moment, Winston felt a twinge of misery. He scooped up the cat and cuddled it, but Blueberry was a sorry substitute for his owner and soon jumped out of Winstonâs arms. Awash with loneliness, Winston dialed Kristyâs number. She picked up on the first ring.
âI miss you,â he said before she could even speak.
âOh, Winston,â Kristy said. âI wish you could be here. The baby came early. Listen to thisââ
A gurgling came down the line. Was that the cooing of a baby? He thought that all infants did was cry and make dirty diapers. Perhaps they werenât so bad after all?
Kristy came back on the phone. âHeâs a cutie. I could hold him twenty-four seven.â Her voice had softened, and Winston could imagine her maternal tenderness whenever she held the baby.
âHe seems sweet,â Winston said, âbabbling and all.â
âI wish you could see his sweet smile.â
I wish I could see your smile, he thought, but didnât say. âWhen are you coming back?â
âNext week,â she said. âAnything interesting going on?â
He didnât want to alarm her about Billâs tragedy, but he had to say something. âBill fell, and Iâm investigating it.â
âOh no. Will he be okay?â
âIâm not sure.â He couldnât tell her that heâd seen a very still body being pulled away from the house.
âHope he recovers soon.â She paused and then fumbled for words. âDid you say youâre investigating it?â
âYes, itâs a little odd. Wish I could get your take on things.â Kristy was invaluable when he got stumped. She helped him see things from a new perspective.
âWhat about Marcy? She could help you.â
His sister? Thatâs why they usually lived an ocean apart. Distance improved their relationship. âWell . . .â
âIs she too busy?â
Winston looked over at his sisterâs coiffed hair and polished nails. âNot exactly.â
âMore importantly, is she happy?â
Winston saw Marcy reach for the remote and start flipping through the channels, a bored expression on her face. âNope,â he said.
âLean on each other then,â Kristy said.
